EMDR
What is EMDR?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitizing and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy proven to be very effective in treating post-traumatic stress disorder as well as other mental health issues. EMDR has been recognized as an effective treatment by many renowned organizations such as the American Psychiatric Association, the World Health Organization, the US Department of Veterans’ Affairs, and many others.
EMDR is a structured therapy designed to help people process and heal from trauma, PTSD, anxiety, and other distressing experiences. It uses guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation to help the brain reprocess traumatic memories so they are less emotionally charged.
-
EMDR therapy helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories similarly to how it naturally processes everyday experiences during REM sleep. By stimulating both sides of the brain with eye movements, tapping, or sounds, EMDR allows people to reduce the emotional intensity of distressing memories and form healthier associations with them.
-
EMDR is effective for:
PTSD and complex trauma
Anxiety and panic disorders
Depression
Phobias
Grief and loss
Chronic pain
Performance anxiety
Attachment and relationship issues
-
The number of sessions varies based on individual needs. Some people experience relief within a few months of weekly sessions, while others with complex trauma may need longer-term treatment. On average, EMDR therapy takes 3-9 months of weekly sessions, but it can be shorter or longer depending on the situation.
